Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen different times.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side struck twice late to take a surprise advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the final moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing shootout win.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the past 13 years.
